  • IGPP Children’s Cyber Behaviour: The Educator’s Perspective

Internet affinity among school-going children has taken a shape of a pandemic now. Studies across the globe and in this country have raised these concerns with the help of strong empirical evidence. Recently, World Health Organisation (WHO) added ‘Gaming Disorder’ to the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, hence, an official mental health disorder. The government’s ambitious aim of Digital India is to make people technologically friendly. Children (Digital child /Generation Z) constitute a significant part of this digital space and are important stakeholders. The internet landscape is different for this generation of children, for them, the internet has changed from being a space of entertainment to a medium of socialization and learning. Children spend lots of their time on the internet and engage in different kinds of activities, from spending hours on social media to online gaming. However, each time they access the internet, data about them and their choices are inadvertently recorded by companies and unknown third parties. This cyber world has also changed children’s mental landscape to a large extend. The appearance of age-inappropriate contents that they are viewing while playing games or accessing social media and sometimes, they even become victims of cybercrime, all this raises concern over its psychological impact on children. Also, this double-edged data security problem and excessive screen time is a matter of concern that demands serious intervention.
